Dole
 
[doːl], Stadt im Département Jura, Ostfrankreich, am Doubs und am Rhein-Rhône-Kanal, 231 m über dem Meeresspiegel, 26 500 Einwohner; Geburtshaus von L. Pasteur (Museum); Herstellung von Landmaschinen, Fahr- und Motorrädern, elektrischen Geräten, Sanitärkeramik und Konfektion.
 
 
In der Altstadt zahlreiche Häuser des 15.-18. Jahrhundert mit reich verzierten Portalen; Kathedrale Notre-Dame (16. Jahrhundert; mit reicher Ausstattung); Hôpital-Dieu (17. Jahrhundert), ehemalige Kapelle des Collège de l'Arc (heute Museum) und alte Apotheke.
 
 
Dole entstand um eine 1092 erstmals genannte Burg der Grafen von Burgund; seit dem 12. Jahrhundert war es Hauptstadt der Franche-Comté und kam mit dieser 1384 zum Herzogtum Burgund. 1423 gründete Herzog Philipp III., der Gute, in Dole eine Universität. Nach Eroberung und vollständiger Zerstörung durch Frankreich 1479 kam die wieder aufgebaute Stadt 1493 an Habsburg, 1678 endgültig an Frankreich. Sie verlor die Zentralbehörden der Franche-Comté, 1691 auch die Universität an Besançon.

[dəʊl], Robert (Bob) J., amerikanischer Politiker, * Russell (Kans.) 22. 7. 1923; Jurist; schloss sich der Republikanischen Partei an, in der er sich zum Vertreter der politischen Mitte entwickelte. 1951-53 war Dole Abgeordneter im Repräsentantenhaus von Kansas, 1953-61 Staatsanwalt für Russell County, 1961-69 Mitglied des amerikanischen Repräsentantenhauses und 1969-96 Senator für Kansas. 1971-73 stand er dem Republican National Committee vor und kandidierte bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen 1976 als Partner Präsidents G. Fords für die Vizepräsidentschaft. Ab 1987 führte er die Republikaner im Senat, 1985-87 und erneut 1995-96 war er Mehrheitsführer des Senats. Nach zwei erfolglosen Bewerbungen 1980 und 1988 wurde Dole 1996 als Kandidat der Republikaner für die Präsidentschaftswahlen nominiert; bei diesen unterlag er dem amtierenden Präsidenten B. Clinton.
